There is variety of houses including pretty thatched cottages together with a village pub, The Red Lion which is about to undergo a full restoration. There is also a selection of holiday accommodation available. To the south of the village there is a large space satellite tracking station although this is not open to the public. Within the village are several flourishing businesses including The Red Dog Art Gallery, the Chocolate Frog Cafe, a traditional Joinery as well as Oakhanger Farm Livery. To the north of the village lies Shortheath Common which is a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) which covers some 143 acres of heath, woodland, lake, pond and bog.
